We’ve all heard of SADD. The malaise that comes over us in the winter when it’s too dark, too cold, and not enough wine. But no one is feeling my pain when I tell them I have SAD. Summer Affective Disorder when there is just too much d*mn sunshine! There. I said it. The days are longgggg. The nights are shooooort. I don’t have twelve hours in me to keep it up. In the dark days I can bounce. Still dark at 8am. No problem. I have electricity and tv and feel like it’s socially acceptable to sit and veg in the dark with a magazine. Tired at 9:00 at night? Go for it! Now when I creep to bed early I don’t even have to turn on a light. Just embarrassing. To myself. I have twelve good hours in me. Goodish. Trying to make it happen for fifteen hours is just asking too much from this Boomlennial. Even when I was a kid my Dad was into a strict bedtime, come rain or come shine. I’d be in bed while it was still light listening to the kids playing under my window. There was no reason to be in bed lying awake for two hours, other then I think he liked rules. Power trip or something. Over a ten year old. I reversed course with my wee ones and encouraged bedlam. Not really, but had more summer sensible rules. Ish. Anyway, I think there are more SAD’s out there then people own up to. Everyone says they love fall. What’s not to love? But maybe a bit of low lighting goes a long way. Or a short way. And who doesn’t look better in low light??
